Vernon Library Media Center
The James H. Vernon School library is a vibrant hub of learning, creativity, and curiosity for students of all ages. It is a welcoming space where students discover new interests, explore ideas, and develop a lifelong love of reading. Through thoughtfully curated collections, engaging activities, and collaborative lessons, the library supports classroom learning while also inspiring independent exploration and imagination.
Throughout the year, we host special events that bring our school community together around books and literacy. One student favorite is our annual Literary Pumpkin Contest, which encourages creativity by inviting students to design pumpkins inspired by beloved book characters and stories. Our book fairs are another highlight, generating excitement about reading while giving students the opportunity to build their own home libraries and discover new authors and genres.
The library also plays an essential role in teaching critical academic and life skills. Students learn digital citizenship, including how to use technology responsibly, safely, and ethically. We focus on information literacy, helping students evaluate sources, distinguish fact from opinion, and conduct meaningful research. In addition, students develop an appreciation of literature by exploring a wide range of texts, participating in read-alouds, and engaging in thoughtful discussions.
Equally important, students gain confidence in library navigation, learning how to locate, select, and care for materials independently. By combining traditional literacy with modern research and digital skills, our school library empowers students to become informed, curious, and responsible learners both inside and outside the classroom.

At Vernon School, throughout the year, the PTA and district host a variety of author visits that enrich students’ learning experiences. These visits include in-person presentations, hands-on workshops, and virtual sessions that allow students to connect directly with authors. During these experiences, authors share their writing process, discuss the inspiration behind their books, and engage students in interactive activities that bring stories to life.
Author visits play an important role in fostering a love of reading and writing by showing students that authors are real people, and that stories are created through creativity, perseverance, and imagination. These experiences motivate students to read more, strengthen literacy skills, and encourage them to express their own ideas through writing. By exposing students to diverse voices and perspectives, author visits also support students’ engagement with literature and help build a strong, inclusive school community.
